Il Sergente of Italia, Avanti! told us about a little event going on at the Lasdon Park and Arboretum in Katonah, NY, hosted by a gentleman named Mark. On Sunday, the 30th Blackshirt Legion visited for the first time, joining up with our friends. Your centurione, in enlisted desert kit, and Giuditta were asked to bring along the fly, so we did and set it up between two leafy trees with the help of Sergente and Artigliere Lorenzo. We planted the sacred tricolor into the New York soil, thereby claiming it for the Italian Empire until it was time to pack up and go. The Crowley radio, which is Bluetooth enabled but looks vintage, made its debut, playing streamed music from the era of the regime--with no commercial interruptions!
Because the weather was hovering around ninety-one degrees, everyone opted for desert kit. Yours truly brought out the 1^ Divisione CC.NN uniform for the first time, and Tomaso the same for Divisione Bologna. Giuditta, as Fasci Femminile, brought dignity and class to what might otherwise be a vulgar gathering of zealous men.
While the visitation was fairly light and the sun was more than hot, we had a good time, practicing some of the drill (hence the note above), and marchin'-up-and-down-the-square.
We did meet some interesting people over the course of the day, however, including some of the GI American reenactors set up a short distance away, a woman working for an Italian-owned company, and another woman who was born in the colony of Italian East Africa who shared her family stories with us.
All in all, despite the heat, being under the fly, which was in turn under the trees, provided a nice respite and the uniforms, while warm, were up to the task of keeping us stylish in toasty conditions.
Our thanks as always to our camerati and we look forward to the next time we can get together per la gloria d'Italia!
